With the introduction of the Delivery Excellence Incentive Program ‘Scorecard,’ the process of making the work environment safer for everyone at Bear Down Logistics has taken a big step forward, says Mike DiPiazza, Bear Down Logistics Vice President of Operations.
The process of creating a new, safer operating culture is not something that Mike figured would happen overnight, but he has been very encouraged by the initial results for the first month of driver and station evaluations.
“In the first month, six out of seven stations were rated at Fanastic-plus,” says Mike. “That’s really impressive when you consider several of those stations were previously rated as Fair. It shows a real commitment to the big safety picture by our Bear Down employees.”
The Scorecard’s Driver Metric Key offers a detailed breakdown on how each driver was rated each day and each week. With Grades of FANTASTIC and GREAT, drivers can take pride in their high level of performance, while grades of FAIR and POOR result in lower ratings and potential forfeiture of weekly bonuses.
“When we look at the Scorecard, we really are not just looking for a short-term pop or a one-time high rating, we are really committed to a long-term impact on safety,” says Mike. “We want to be able to sustain these high safety levels and we will continue to offer one-on-one coaching to ensure that every one of our drivers can succeed.”
Success can be measured in many ways, but individual drivers will no doubt be most interested in the $100 weekly bonus that can be earned with Great-or-higher individual Scorecard ratings. Mike says the bonuses are meant to represent management’s sincere commitment to improvement and long-term success.
“We wanted to offer a bonus that really would have impact for our drivers,” says Mike. “While I love to see the improving safety ratings at all of our stations, I also enjoy seeing our drivers taking home an additional $400 a month. Heck, at that level of bonus, that’s the equivalent of a car payment.”
If you have any questions about your individual Scorecard, how to improve your score or attain the highest possible level of monthly bonus, contact your station manager.
